When Tabassum said, ‘I will never be upset because my name is Tabassum’

Tabassum means smile and happiness. The late veteran actress remained true to her name even as she peacefully left for her heavenly abode on November 18 without letting her fans know about her demise. It was only after her final rites that the news of her death was out in public. After all, it was the last wish of the 78-year-old actress to not announce her death for at least 2 days.

I had a few cherished moments with the veteran actress this year when she spoke about how external beauty starts fading as one grows in life. “Now that I am moving towards my 80s, I am realising that beauty, voice, skin, and some other parts of your body start leaving you,” the late veteran actress had said in our conversation.

She sounded a bit upset about the demise of legends Dilip Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar, who also belonged to the 40s era like her. I requested her to not feel so dejected, to which the jovial Tabassum said, ” I will never be upset because my name is Tabassum which means smile and happiness. So I will always keep smiling and cheerful.”

May you smile and spread happiness wherever you are, Baby Tabassum.

I would like to end this piece with one of the late actress’ favourite shayaris – Jo beet gaye hain woh zamane nahi aate… aate hain naye log, purane nahi aate…
