Veteran playback singer Vani Jairam has passed away. She was 78. The National Award-winning singer was found dead at her residence in Chennai on February 4. The exact cause of her death has not been revealed yet.
On January 25, Vani was bestowed with Padma Bhushan — the third-highest civilian award of the country by the Government of India.
Born on November 30 in 1945 in Vellore, Tamil Nadu, Vani came from a family of classical musicians. She gave her first public performance at the All India Radio, Madras when she was 8 years old. However, she started her career in the early 70s and recorded her first Telugu song for the film ‘Abhimanavanthulu‘ (1973).
In her glorious career, she has sung songs in over one thousand Indian movies in various languages, including Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada, among others.
Her husband, Jairam, passed away in 2018.
Soon after the news of her shocking death was confirmed, tributes started pouring in.
