‘Jersey’ opening box office collection: Shahid Kapoor-Mrunal Thakur’s film has a

After multiple delays, Shahid Kapoor and Mrunal Thakur‘s sports drama ‘Jersey‘ released in theatres yesterday. The film opened to low collections at the box office likely due to it not catering to the morning crowd, reports Boxofficeindia. It remains to be seen how the film performed in the second half and how it progresses over the weekend.

The fate of ‘Jersey’ at the box office is important as it could indicate the performance of so many other films of the same type releasing over the next 8-10 months. Cinema as well as the audience have evolved over the two years of pandemic and it remains to be seen what kind of response this film receives after facing multiple setbacks due to the pandemic lockdowns and restrictions.

The film has received positive responses. Fans of Shahid Kapoor also hailed his performance in the sports drama. Director Gowtam Tinnanuri, who also directed the original, received a standing ovation after a screening. Shahid Kapoor shared a video of the same on social media and wrote, “The director. The man. The captain of the ship. So proud of you. You deserve all this love. And more. (sic)”

Even South star Nani was all praise for Shahid after watching the Hindi version of Telugu film ‘Jersey’. “Watched #Jersey and out @Gowtam19 again hit it out of the park. What performances and heart. #Shahidkapoor @Mrunal0801

Speaking about the movie, Shahid had previously told BT, “Jersey is a family film because it has those emotions that you have to experience with family and friends. Pure emotions are what we have experienced in the last two years from close quarters. It takes you back to the fundamentals of relationships and the basics of life. I have a lot of love for this film, not just because it is my film but because it did something to me when I saw the original. It gave me a sense of hope and this drive to never give up, regardless of circumstances. You can get up today to chase something you really want. This is the spirit of this film and I connected deeply with that. If the emotions are strong and visceral, after going through whatever they have in the last two years, people will feel it and it will give them that boost that they all want right now.”
